Can you buy vegan puff pastry? I checked the ingredients to 34 puff pastry products to find the answer. In fact, 82% of them were vegan! And in this post, I’m going to help you find those vegan brands (with pictures)!
These are among the most popular vegan puff pastry brands: Pepperidge Farm Puff Pastry, Jus Rol Puff Pastry, Pampas Puff Pastry, Greenvale Puff Pastry (Aldi), Tenderflake Puff Pastry, Lidl Puff Pastry, Borg’s Puff Pastry (Woolworth’s), Aussie Bakery Puff Pastry, Wewalka Puff Pastry, Sainsbury’s Puff Pastry and Pillsbury Puff Pastry.
Below I’ll show pictures of each of these vegan puff pastry packages. That way, you know what to look for in the store! I’ll also share the results for even more brands I checked, including some gluten-free options!
Store-Bought Vegan Puff Pastry Brands
Let’s start with a quick visual tour of 11 vegan puff pastry options you’re likely to see in stores. Then we can get into more of the “how to check if puff pastry is vegan” after that.
1. Pepperidge Farms Puff Pastry Sheets
Pepperidge Farm Puff Pastry is considered vegan. However, it does contain palm oil, which is a gray-area ingredient that some vegans avoid.
This brand is sold in the U.S. And don’t they look good on the package? Here’s the full ingredients list:
Pepperidge Farm Puff Pastry Sheets Ingredients: “Enriched Wheat Flour (Flour, Niacin, Reduced Iron, Thiamine Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Water, Vegetable Oils (Palm, Soybean, Hydrogenated Cottonseed), Contains 2% Or Less Of: High Fructose Corn Syrup, Salt, Mono And Diglycerides, Soy Lecithin, Malted Barley Flour, Turmeric And Annatto Extracts For Color.” (source)
2. Jus Rol Puff Pastry
Six of nine Just Rol Puff Pastry products are vegan. The “Chilled All Butter” sheet contains butter, while the “Chilled Puff Pastry Block” and “Frozen Puff Pastry Cases” contain L-cysteine (often made from duck feathers). The others are vegan.
What’s the story with L-cysteine? It’s an amino acid that is sourced from duck feathers about 80% of the time. It’s a confusing ingredient—not only is the source rarely specified in ingredients lists, but sometimes it’s not listed in ingredients at all! (source)
Jus Rol is sold in the UK. Here’s the breakdown of Jus Rol puff pastry products:
Puff Pastry | Is It Vegan? |
Chilled All Butter Puff Pastry Sheet | No (Contains Butter) |
Chilled Puff Pastry Block | Maybe (Contains L-Cysteine) |
Chilled Gluten Free Puff Pastry Sheet | Vegan |
Chilled Puff Pastry Sheets | Vegan |

Frozen Puff Pastry Sheets | Vegan |
Frozen Puff Squares | Vegan |

Three of four flavors of Pampas Puff Pastry are considered vegan. However, the “Butter Puff Pastry” does contain butter.

Pampas Butter Puff Pastry | No (Contains Butter) |
Pampas Light Puff Pastry | Vegan |
Pampas Shortcrust Pastry | Vegan |
4. Greenvale Puff Pastry (Aldi)
Greenvale Puff Pastry is generally considered vegan. However, it does contain palm fat and sugar, which are gray-area ingredients that some vegans avoid.
This brand is sold at Aldi in the UK. Here’s the full ingredients list:

Tenderflake Puff Pastry Ingredients: “Flour (Wheat), Modified Palm And Canola Oil Margarine (Soy), Water, Sea Salt. May Contain Milk.” (source)
As I explain in another blog post, “May contain milk” is not a big deal for most vegans. Generally, this allergen warning simply means that the food was manufactured in a facility that also produces foods containing milk. But this product does not have milk.
6. Lidl Puff Pastry
Lidl Puff Pastry is generally considered vegan. However, it does contain palm fat and sugar, which are gray-area ingredients that some vegans avoid.
This brand is sold in the UK. Actually if you notice, there’s a green “V” vegan symbol on the front of the package. Pretty cool! Here’s the full ingredients list:

Aussie Bakery Puff Pastry is considered vegan. In fact, the front of the package clarifies that it is “100% Vegan.” However, it does contain sugar and palm oil, which are arguably gray-area ingredients that some vegans avoid.
Aussie Bakery is actually in the US rather than Australia. I found it at Whole Foods, in fact. Here’s the ingredients:

This brand is sold in the U.S. I couldn’t find a good picture of the Pillsbury Puff Pastry package. But keep in mind, you’re looking for the “Frozen Puff Pastry Sheets”—not the Crescent rolls or other biscuits. (However, I cover vegan Pillsbury biscuits here.)
Here’s the full ingredients list for the Frozen Pillsbury Puff Pastry Sheets:
Pillsbury Best Frozen Puff Pastry Sheets Ingredients: “Enriched Flour (Wheat Flour, Malted Barley Flour, Niacin, Iron, Thiamin Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Palm And Soybean Oil, Water, Salt, Monocalcium Phosphate.” (source)

Is Puff Pastry Vegan?
So, in general, how can you check if puff pastry is vegan? What ingredients do you really need to be careful about? Let’s explore that.
Does Puff Pastry Have Dairy?
Puff pastry usually does not contain dairy. However, after reviewing 25 brands of puff pastry, I did find four products containing butter.
Most brands of puff pastry contain palm oil and other vegetable oils as the fat source—not butter. But it’s worth checking, as a few of them use butter.
Does Puff Pastry Have Eggs?
Puff Pastry typically does not contain eggs. However, after reviewing 25 brands of puff pastry, I did find one brand with eggs: GeeFree Gluten-Free Puff Pastry. None of the other 24 brands contained eggs.
What Is Vegan Puff Pastry Made Of?
Vegan puff pastry is usually made of wheat flour, water, margarine containing palm oil, salt, and a few other ingredients. Sometimes a bit of sugar is included, as well. The key is that butter is not used, and no other animal products.
