Can vegans eat biscuits? Well, not all biscuits. Biscuits usually contain some kind of “buttermilk” flavor, and this is often sourced from animal products. That said, you can find a surprising number of pre-made vegan biscuits.
Here are 9 canned vegan biscuits you can find in stores:
- Pillsbury Grands! Southern Homestyle Original Biscuits
- Pillsbury Grands! Southern Homestyle Buttermilk Biscuits
- Pillsbury Grands! Flaky Layers Sweet Hawaiian Biscuits
- Pillsbury Flaky Layers Buttermilk Biscuits
- Annie’s Organic Flaky Biscuits
- Immaculate Organic Flaky Biscuits
- Great Value Buttermilk Biscuits
- Hy-Vee Buttermilk Biscuits
- Value Corner Homestyle Biscuits
Below I’ll show pictures of each of these vegan biscuit packages—so you know what to look for in the store! I’ll also share a full list of every Pillsbury biscuit flavor and which are vegan, along with a full list of the 15 other biscuit brands I checked.
Store-Bought Vegan Biscuits
First, let’s just take a quick visual tour of 9 vegan biscuit options you’re likely to see in stores. Then we can get into more of the “how to check if biscuits are vegan” after that.
1. Pillsbury Grands! Southern Homestyle Original Biscuits
These are classic, well-loved vegan Pillsbury biscuits. But keep in mind: Pillsbury has many similar-sounding flavors. It’s easy to confuse them. See the list of Pillsbury biscuits below to check the non-vegan flavors and make sure you don’t mix them up.
2. Pillsbury Grands! Southern Homestyle Buttermilk Biscuits
Even though it’s called “Buttermilk,” this flavor in this variety does not contain milk. Again, make sure you don’t confuse it with one of the similarly named flavors that does contain milk, however.
3. Pillsbury Grands! Flaky Layers Sweet Hawaiian Biscuits
I just found these when researching for this post, and now I’m so curious to try them. What do Sweet Hawaiian biscuits taste like? Sounds pretty neat—and they’re fully vegan!
4. Pillsbury Flaky Layers Buttermilk Biscuits
Another vegan Pillsbury option. Again, be careful with these Pillsbury options. Many of the packages look similar. Some are vegan, some are not. Check the end of the ingredients. See if it says “Contains Milk” (not vegan) or just “May contain milk” (this is vegan, as I explain here.).
5. Annie’s Organic Flaky Biscuits
Annie’s is a leading brand when it comes to all things organic. Not all of their products are dairy-free and vegan-friendly—but it turns out their flaky biscuits are! Nice!
6. Immaculate Organic Flaky Biscuits
These biscuits from Immaculate were actually rated as the best biscuit brand in multiple round-up reviews I found online. So I might start with these, if you’re not sure which pre-made vegan biscuits to choose!
7. Great Value Buttermilk Biscuits
Yes, you can buy cheap vegan biscuits at Wal-Mart! Who would’ve guessed? Great Value is the store brand for Wal-Mart, and their Flaky Jumbo Buttermilk Biscuits are vegan.
8. Hy-Vee Buttermilk Biscuits
Hy-Vee stores are regional to around the Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin. But if you’ve got one near you, heads up: Their Buttermilk Biscuits are vegan!
9. Value Corner Homestyle Biscuits
Value Corner is one of the store brands at Safeway—and their Homestyle Biscuits are vegan! So this is another budget option. But fair warning: I read a review of these biscuits that said they weren’t the best. That’s why I’m listing them last!

Non-Vegan Ingredients in Canned Biscuits
So, now that you’ve seen a sampling of what biscuits are vegan, let’s look at how to tell if biscuits are vegan. Because honestly, you may have a different selection in your area—and many of the Pillsbury options are hard to tell apart, too.
Basically, the non-vegan ingredients in biscuits are going to be milk ingredients. These are the common ones you will see:
- Buttermilk
- Skim Milk
- Butter
- Buttermilk Powder
- Whey
- Sodium Caseinate
But luckily, there’s a quick way to tell if biscuits are dairy-free or not: Just skip to the end of the ingredients list. Look for the allergen warning. Now, if the biscuits contain milk, it will say “Contains Milk” or something similar.
Just be aware: If they don’t contain milk, they will likely still say “May contain milk” or “May contain traces of milk.” But this is okay for vegans.
“May contain milk” just means the facility is sometimes used to process milk products—so they have to legally disclose the risk of contamination. It’s mainly a warning for people with severe allergies. Almost all vegans agree: It is okay to eat these products!
For more about “may contain milk” warnings, see my separate blog post about it.
“Gray Area” Ingredients in Biscuits
For the sake of completeness, I will also mention this: Biscuits sometimes contain other ingredients that the most strict vegans may choose to avoid. These ingredients include:
- Sugar, which is often filtered with animal bone char.
- Palm oil, which is sometimes boycotted due to sustainability issues.
- Natural flavor, which is usually vegan but can be sourced from animals.
- Sucralose, which is synthetically made but has a history of animal testing.
Now let’s get into those comprehensive lists of all the biscuit flavors I checked and which were vegan.
