Are There Eggs in Bread? [90 Bread Recipes Analyzed]

Eggs are a common ingredient in cakes and baked goods. But are there typically eggs in bread? Well, I’ve been avoiding eggs for 14 years as a vegan—and for this blog post, I took the time to research 90 bread recipes to give you the best answer possible.

The following kinds of bread are typically egg-free: White, whole wheat, Italian, French, sourdough, rye, pumpernickel, pita, ciabatta, and potato bread. The following kinds of bread often do contain eggs: challah, brioche, banana bread, gluten-free bread, and to a lesser extent, naan bread.

Below, I’ll share convenient tables where you can quickly see which breads contained egg and which ones did not. Even if your exact bread product is not listed, you should be able to get a sense of what to expect from the data here.

Does Bread Contain Eggs?

The four main ingredients of bread dough are flour, water, yeast, and salt. Often, some sugar is included to feed the yeast. Other ingredients may be added, too. But most bread dough does not contain egg.

Keep in mind, this was a survey of store-bought breads, for the most part. When making bread at home, recipes may differ. I obviously can’t promise you that any specific kind of bread will never contain egg.

In homemade bread, some recipes also call for using an “egg wash.” This mixture of egg and liquid is often painted on the outside of the bread to give it a certain texture or color (shiny, brown, etc).

One last observation worth sharing here: “Sweet breads” tend to contain egg much more often. Two other breads that often contain egg are panettone and zopf. These are “sweet breads.”
